In addition to outdoor activities, the White Mountains also offer a variety of cultural and historical attractions. The region is home to several Native American tribes, including the Apache and Navajo. Visitors can learn about their rich history and culture at museums and cultural centers.

For history buffs, there are numerous sites and landmarks that tell the story of the area. The White Mountain Historical Park, for example, offers guided tours of historic buildings and a glimpse into the region’s past. The Kinishba Ruins, a prehistoric village located on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, is another fascinating site to explore.

Silver Creek Golf Club

Created by Golf Course Architect, Gary Panks, this 18 hole Championship course was designed to be in harmony with the gently rolling juniper covered hills of the surrounding terrain. This is the first golf course Mr. Panks designed and is still among his favorites. Silver Creek Golf Club provides an outstanding challenge for all, from the expert player using the black tees to the novice playing the white or scarlet tees. It is a delightful course for everyone to play, including ladies, seniors and juniors.

The course has recently has been taken over by Lloyd Harvey, he also is owner of Bison Golf Club in Show Low, AZ.

Silver Creek, White Mountain Lake

Silver Creek is a 45 mile long stream located in the White Mountains north of Show Low, and it is a tributary of the Little Colorado River. It’s known for producing large trout and is a popular fly fishing destination.

This stream is a spring fed creek that maintains a consistent water temperature all year round. It is stocked with Apache trout and very large Rainbow brood stock for the opening of the catch and release season.

It’s a lot of fun watching friends and family cast to a lunker, see the take of the fly, and watch the battle, as the fish finally comes to net.

Sunrise Ski Resort

Sunrise Park Resort is a ski resort located near Greer, Arizona. The resort consists of three mountains named Sunrise Peak, Cyclone Peak, and Apache Peak. Situated on the Colorado Plateau and perched atop the White Mountains in Eastern Arizona.

It is owned and operated by the White Mountain Apache Tribe, and is located on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. The resort is a year-round recreation destination and offers a wide range of outdoor activities. During the winter, the resort’s three mountains offer excellent alpine skiing. There are plenty of challenging runs for experienced skiers and an abundance of enjoyable intermediate runs. When Arizona experiences wet winters, which aren’t all too uncommon, Sunrise provides skiing as good as anywhere in the Southwest.

Snowflake

Brigham Young, the Mormon prophet, and several men left their Utah residences in April of 1877 to establish a site in the Arizona region. William Jordan Flake, one of these men, and A.Z. Palmer, his brother-in-law, traveled to and from neighboring New Mexico, eventually finding themselves near the Silver Creek spring. The two followed the spring and stumbled upon James Stinson’s ranch, of which Flake ended up buying.

Soon after the families established residence, Erastus Snow, a Mormon apostle, suggested the area be named Snowflake after himself and Flake. Thus, the town of Snowflake was officially founded. Today, the community has seen a gradual growth in population and is the site for commerce and economic opportunity in the northeastern part of Arizona.
